Daydream (2021)

Have you ever woken up from a nap and felt fully relaxed, peaceful and at ease, almost not knowing for a couple moments what time it is, where you are, or what you were doing – as if you were floating in space? That is the vibe with “Daydream,” which is inspired by my meditation practice and my studies of neuroscience.*

“Daydream” is the second of the Meditation series and it is preceded only by the purely white monochromatic artwork “Meditation” (available for purchase). In “Daydream,” the stillness and undulations of white matter indicate the random yet methodical way of how or mind (i.e., brain) operates – a little random, somewhat harmonious, completely unique, and operating among various dimensions.

The light blue in the work is a representation of the sporadic thoughts and memories that lurk in the background of our minds; they may be intuitions, quick thoughts, or moods which appear sporadically throughout the undulating texture of the white mind matter and appear with an almost defined pattern. Nevertheless, the other color within the work is focused as two precise linear streaks – one is phthalo green and the other an ultramarine blue, both of which represent focused neural pathways, or defined streams of knowledge and thought within the mind.

Whereas the green and the blue both start at distinct points and with unique wave frequencies, they intersect in the lower right quadrant of the work, and this point is the representation of a creative thought or idea within the mind. For instance, you can suppose that the blue streak represents our knowledge of fire (what it is, and basic qualities of what it does), and that the green streak represents our ideas of activities we do (play, work, live, eat, exercise). When they are combined, our knowledge of fire and our conscientiousness of human activities combine into the form of innovation: fire can be used not only to keep warm as part of survival, but for many other things: candles, fireworks, performances, engine ignitions, cooking, play (not recommended), destruction (not recommended), as decoration, communication, or anything else you can think of.

Within the imaginative an intuitive realm of daydreaming, the point where two distinct realms of thought collide is the critical point of creativity -- an aha! moment.
